The 60 Second Update with

Senator Jim DeMint

1. Is the most important part of any health reform reducing the number of uninsured and how does your plan do that?

The most important part of health care reform will be to ensure that every American has the ability to afford, own and keep a health insurance plan that the government can never take over or take away.  My Health Care Freedom Plan eliminates the government’s grip on the health care market and provides every American with the ability to access and own a health plan personally tailored to their needs.

The Health Care Freedom Plan will...

-bring fairness to the tax code by giving every family that doesn’t get their health care at work a $5,000 tax credit, and $2,500 for individuals

-end the state-by-state monopolies that protect insurance companies from real competition and finally allow families to access affordable plans in other states

-provide block grants to states to develop innovative models that ensure affordable health insurance coverage for people with pre-existing health conditions

-increase transparency for patients by requiring hospitals to list procedure and drug prices

- and reduce predatory and frivolous malpractice lawsuits against physicians and hospitals

According to a Heritage Foundation, this plan will reduce the uninsured by 22.4 million people in just 5 years. The legislation is completely paid for by terminating the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and forcing companies to repay their bailout funds within 5 years.  The Health Care Freedom Plan thus covers more people than other plans, in half the time, and at no additional cost to the taxpayer.

Question 2. What's wrong with a public option as long as there are still private ones?
